PLOT:

This movie revolves around the socially awkward and clever girl that is admitted into the school. There is a Brazilian feature film called Confessions of an Invisible Girl (dubbed into English from Portuguese) about a teenage girl who has always felt like an outcast and friendless and the victim of her parents and grandparent’s constant sometimes hurtful encouragement. The film follows her attempts to fit in. A homosexual character is welcomed for who he is, and teens kiss. Bullying. It is very uncommon for bullies to fight with other girls, then step on their glasses as an act of retaliation for what they’ve done.

DIRECTOR:

RELEASE DATE:

PLOT:

“The Suicide Squad” is another band of unlikely heroes that defy the odds to triumph against a galactic foe. The term “Guardians of the Realm” wouldn’t be wholly out of place. Even Gunn’s mentor Lloyd Kaufman makes a cameo appearance in the film, lending it an air of slapstick comedy and overt brutality that he developed while working with Troma Entertainment in the 1990s. There’s no one else who could’ve written anything so delightfully nasty, cruel, and unrepentant as this, and the DC Universe is better for it.

REVIEW:

To be clear, this is a hybrid picture that has confident performers from the previous films and new ones, but it also stands on its own. You don’t have to (and shouldn’t) have watched the Ayer enjoy this one, but it’s also not a complete reset.

Viola Davis, who played Amanda Waller, the leader of Task Force X in the last film, is returning actors. She’s in command of the Suicide Squad, a group of super-powered criminals equipped with microchips implanted in their brains and ordered into combat. Go boom if you deviate from your mission plan. Go boom instead of following instructions. Go boom if you say anything wrong about Waller.

Another gathering of people is arriving on the opposite shore simultaneously as this one, enabling team one to serve as the diversion. From here on out, things truly get interesting. The crew is sent to demolish a Nazi-era jail in the island’s interior, where it turns out an extraterrestrial monster called Starro is being held captive. Lots of mayhem occurs as a result of this.

However, Gunn’s most significant achievement here is controlling this sort of sensory assault and not getting lost in the cacophony, which is more complicated than it seems. He doesn’t let the characters get lost in the chaos of the action, which is a common problem in today’s shoddy blockbusters. A rollercoaster without brakes, “The Suicide Squad” is really a very well-calibrated action-comedy, mixing hilarious rhythms with spurts of extreme violence. Also, this is the most brutal superhero movie to date, making “Deadpool” seem almost tame. As for Gunn’s brutality, it doesn’t stop there; he embraces the R rating that Marvel would never grant him, which means that his characters may have limbs torn from them, and their deaths will almost always be announced with an unappealing, squeaky sound. Most contemporary blockbusters can’t be as fun as this movie is in terms of action. If Gunn and his crew are having a good time, it will rub off on you. Audiences can tell when a filmmaker is making a picture for a business rather than for themselves. When that doesn’t happen, a film has a lasting impact, and Gunn makes this picture with a passionate, Troma-raised heart.

He’s also a great director at balancing a serious tone with his actors’ comic abilities. Both charm and fun were there in the first two “Guardians” movies, and both are present in spades here. By this time, Robbie knows Quinn likes the back of his hand, and Gunn seems to take her back to her roots more than Ayer did (even in terms of color scheme). It’s about time Idris Elba had a chance to shine in an action movie role, and he does just that. Now the rumors about how good he’d be as James Bond can resume. He’s charming and shows some nuance in his character’s internal struggle about being compelled to become a hero. They’re the stars, but everyone here contributes and brings a sense of fun to the proceedings, demonstrating Gunn’s mastery with big ensembles.

Like many contemporary superhero films, “The Suicide Squad” becomes tedious and repetitive after a while, and it’s a shame that a picture created from a provocative pattern ends with heroes and villains smashing into collapsing structures once again. Without giving anything away, the closing moments of “The Suicide Squad” have a great playfulness to them, but the pattern of “huge boom, building fall down” becomes too familiar in the end. Even while the picture is very well-made, its last third suffers from a distinct lack of ambition. Just when the film is about to devolve into tedium, Gunn regains control and focuses on what has always piqued his interest: the underdog. If you ask James Gunn, anyone—the Toxic Avenger, Rocket Raccoon, or The Polka-Dot Man—could be a hero if given the opportunity.

DIRECTOR:

Brian Mendoza

RELEASE DATE:

August 20, 2021

PLOT AND SUMMARY:

As soon as you see the trailer for “Sweet Girl,” you’ll understand why Jason Momoa decided to not only star in but also produce the action-revenge thriller.

There are action scenes woven throughout this vast and brutal story that may be confusing at times and emotionally draining at others. Isabela (Merced) is torn between her father’s quest for vengeance after his wife died of cancer at the hands of an unscrupulous pharmaceutical firm and her father’s desire to get even. There are many Fortysomething Anglo men with baseball hats playing “All-American” character roles right now. One of them is Jason Momoa’s ex-military man Ray Cooper. This portrays Momoa, half-Native Hawaiian, as a relatable everyman, on par with Mark Wahlberg or Matt Damon’s personae.

It seems to aspire to be five or six significant blockbusters from the 1990s and early 2000s all at once. Whenever an action beat or plot twist is lifted from another film, you’ll be able to tell which ones they are. However, movies like “The Fugitive,” “Terminator,” and the Jason Bourne series stand out, as do any other big-budget blockbuster where the storytelling cheats to create a huge surprise that no one saw coming because it’s actually pretty stupid. With a running time of almost two hours, “Sweet Girl” might pass for a working-class hero legal drama like “Dark Waters” or “Erin Brockovich,” only the protagonist is a bruiser who can throw another man’s skull through a brick wall.

Sadly, the narrative starts with this. Fast-forwarding to the point when Amanda has lost all her hair and is entirely unable to care for herself, the movie shows her sitting in a treatment facility, watching her hands on the clock. When the CEO of the pharmaceutical business suddenly withdraws a generic medication from the market, Amanda loses out on the opportunity to use it since it’s much less expensive than the name-brand version. There are rumors that there was some kind of reward. It’s an audience-pleasing moment when Ray phones onto a TV chat program and threatens Justin Bartha’s CEO, Simon Keeley. After that, he follows through on his word.

“Sweet Girl’s” initial appeal is that, despite its hero having commando-level combat training, it depicts him as a flawed human being who makes mistakes and has to recover from them. It then lets him loose in a world where guys like Keeley have plenty of protection and enemies are hampered by economic and physics laws from getting within striking distance. In addition, this movie does not take place in a comic book world where the repercussions of one’s actions are indeterminate. For failing to do something once, Ray is labeled a danger to society. He and his daughter spend almost all of the film hiding from the authorities and calling important allies on burner phones they’ve secretly acquired and delivered to remote parts of the woods where they’re camped out in Ray and his vintage muscle car’s trunk.

Some scenes have Ray like a superhero who pulls off amazing rescues and improvises his way out of jams that Bond could struggle with. However, the film makes an effort to make everything seem plausible. A grounded and earthy performer, Momoa reminds me more of Burt Lancaster or Anthony Quinn than a typical ‘roided-up action figure—a broad-shouldered, sad-eyed working-class hero. While he’s doing the spinning dervish thing we’ve come to anticipate from characters of this kind, Ray is much more fascinating when he’s crying in a hospital corridor or yelling at his kid for refusing to get out of the vehicle when he’s ready to go on a killing mission.

The production’s action, on the other hand, is the least exciting part. In the action sequences, Ray and different opponents (including a solitary assassin portrayed by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who looks like Anton Chigurh) smash through walls and windows, tumbledown stairwells, and emerge at the end looking well beaten. However, they’re usually filmed and edited in a “Taken” style, with the camera swiveling wildly and the cuts dropping in strange places, suggesting that the primary aim was to hide the fact that they didn’t have enough time or money to do what they intended.

The story gets increasingly confusing as it goes along; the film adds narratively unnecessary sidequests and time shifts, revealing twists that are more irritating than exciting for viewers who have become attached to the characters’ humanity. It’s sad to watch the prominent actors—particularly Momoa, Garcia-Rulfo, and Merced—put so much effort into persuading the viewer to accept absurd things rather than clinging to more familiar emotions and circumstances. Fortifying absurdity is a Herculean task, and Merced excels at it.

PLOT And SUMMARY:

This movie revolves around the Roman, Albert, and their companions that go on a wilderness trekking expedition. When the gang discovers an enigmatic gunman has ambushed them, they quickly find themselves in a fight for their lives.

REVIEW:

The movie has fewer than 90 minutes of running time, so it should be simple to watch. Nope. This movie had the odd sensation of running far longer than it does. Much more time. It gets a fast start with plenty of suspense, but as the story progresses, the intensity decreases, and many viewers may lose interest. But the good news is that Prey catches up and keeps the audience interested once again. However, the movie’s quality fluctuates wildly. As a result, Prey seems to be far longer than it is.

The cast may be recognizable to people familiar with the most prominent German actors and actresses. Still, I enjoyed not recognizing any of the actors or actresses before watching the film. Prey’s thrills are all the more credible since we don’t know any of the actors.

Maxi, a terrorist assault victim, meets Karl, a seductive student, and joins a European youth organization that has the seizure of political power as its only goal.

REVIEW:

Berliner Alex has a peroxide-blonde daughter named Maxi. There are no elaborate special effects used to recreate the devastation caused by the explosion. Instead, Schwochow focuses on the fall of a struck bird among the dust and rubble. If you can get beyond the fact that the whole scenario is obviously planned and scripted, it’s still an intriguing metaphor.

Because he had just left the building to get something from his vehicle, Alex had miraculously survived. Maxi had also departed for work before the blast. But Ines, the children, and seven other people are killed. That’s when she ends up drifting farther and further away from her father and closer and closer to the beautiful titular Karl (Jannis Niewoehner). He understands just how to use her anger and bewilderment for his own ends and purposes. For Karl, Re/Generation Europe is a fictitious organization that sells “polished” and marketable extreme right ideologies. Generative Identitaire in France, as well as the Identitaere Bewegung Oesterreichs in Austria, obviously influence this movement.) In the beginning, Maxi is just a spectator at these meetings, but the film is predictable enough for viewers to know that she would soon step upon a rally stage and become the center of attention herself.

Since then, Schwochow has been increasingly involved in high-profile television, directing, for example, The Crown’s “Prince of Wales learns Welsh” episode and the first season of the top-rated German series Bad Banks. That experience seems to have given him the ability to set out situations for maximum effect on a bit of budget, which is impressive. (The frequent use of narrow focus and highly saturated colors give the impression that the work is suitable for a music video.) On the other hand, he seems happy to let his characters wander in their situations quite a bit. If character arcs span many seasons, this isn’t a problem. This is a fast-paced film, and it’s hard not to be carried away at times. However, there’s a persistent feeling that Schwochow and screenwriter Thomas Wendrich are content to have their characters merely carry out their acts without making them feel or experience them emotionally.

Highlights include the few times when we are reminded that our heroes really do have emotions. One such instance is when Maxi tells Karl why she misses her mother in an adorable sequence.

What’s left is a smattering of engaging performances. Although Niewoehner’s character appears more enamored with the limelight his political beliefs give him than the ideas themselves, he nevertheless manages to be captivating. Also, as the rebellious daughter and heartbroken father who no longer understand one other in their odd-couple arrangement, Wedler and Peschel are believable.

REVIEW:

“Finding ‘Ohana’ starts with an exciting start as Pili (like newcomer Kea Peahu) runs a bicycle across Brooklyn. She’s geocaching, an outdoor escape room resembling a GPS-guided treasure hunt. “Sorry, people, it’s a competition,” she apologizes if she knocks in the small laundry people and items aside without attempting to conceal the success of her voice. We have a perspective that takes us inside her handlebars, giving us a vivid and energetic racing feeling.

Not just Pili’s riding is quick. She outsmarts the other competitors with persistence, excellent problem resolution, and the ability to speak in Spanish with her partner so nobody else can hear her answer. And this award is a visit to the geocaching camp, so she may practice even more on her talents. “This will be EVER’s greatest summer!”

But after all, she can’t go camping. In the following scene, Pili is so far away from Brooklyn’s street that it might be the other side of the globe. It’s really the opposite side of the world, rural O’ahu. Pili, always concerned, has brought back to her childhood home Pilli and her cranky little brother Ioane (Alex Aiono) with her double smoking-cessation patches-on-the-arm mother Leilani (Kelly Hu). The grandpa of the children (Branscombe Richmond) had a heart attack and requires assistance.

Mostly it’s great fun, with a beautiful mixture of adventure, humor, warm-hearted moments, and even a little (teen) romance, to Joseph Trapanese’s terrific music. On the soundtrack, there are also some lively and well-selected pop songs that prevent things from becoming stressful, like “Pump it” by the Black Eyed Peas (based on “Misirlou” themes by Dick Dale). The landscape is beautiful, and the stunts are carefully organized. The youthful cast is excellent, featuring Lindsay Watson, a lovely Islander firmly linked with the indigenous customs but glad to sing along with Meghan Trainor, and Owen Vaccaro, a delightfully strange child along the way (“The House with a clock in its walls”), as Casper. His remark about “Lost” while traveling around his shooting sites is a hoot.

A sequence of flashbacks recreates the pirate’s tale with the help of the scenes by Chris Parnell, Marc Evan Jackson, and Ricky Garcia. Pili, E, Hanna, and Casper use the instructions in the note back precisely to depict cave children thinking of pirate treasure with delighted and frightening obstacles, such as skeletons, spiders (some harmless, others unsafe) riddles, and contraptions. Different difficulties offer each search party member an opportunity to lead, and each person receives assistance and help from others. But the ultimate task of the film is one that they all have to face together since they determine not what can be done but what is right. A twist that pulls together native beliefs and contemporary problems is unexpected and surprising. We leave the movie as if we discovered some ‘Ohana ourselves.

DIRECTOR:

Robert Schwentke

Release Date:

July 23, 2021

CAST:

Takehiro Hira, Haruka Abe, Samuel Finzi, Peter Mensah, Henry Golding, Úrsula Corberó, Andrew Koji, Samara Weaving, Eri Ishida, Steven Allerick, Iko Uwais, Max Archibald.

REVIEW:

Snake Eyes has to revenge on his dad (Steven Allerick), who, on behalf of Cobra, was murdered by a murderer (Samuel Finzi), a flamboyant terrorist cabal. Snake Eyes was going to do everything to find the murderer of his father and would even betray Arashikage (Andrew Koji), his friend Tommy, who was the primary heir to the clan of the Ninja covert Arashikage. However, to win Tommy’s confidence, Snake Eyes must convince the Tommy family by passing a series of ninja trials involving enormous snakes and a mystical rock. “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” is strange

Snake Eyes typically go a little farther, since like with other characters of G.I. Joe, there is nothing to the nature outside some brilliant, child-friendly overarching ideas, like devotion and honesty.

So Snake Eyes’ major character test would he sell out Tommy—in return for information on the murderer of his father, Kenta (Takehiro Kira), a disgraces member of the Arashikage clan? The answer will not surprise you at all, but that is practically next to the point. The fundamental issue with “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” is that it answers a topic that no one asked, and with language and action movies that are drastically overproduced. It’s too politically polished to be a war crime, yet too dull to be a good summer film.

Everyone has a belabored or sarcastic response to each other’s queries, such as, who’s Cobra? How’s G.I. Joe? Why do you want Tommy to become a buddy so severely? There is not much chemistry between the film protagonists, partially because they do not appear to spread the screen for more than a second or two at a time.

Also, the action sequences are reduced not only by hand-held photography that causes headache — don’t bother to watch it in IMAX, but are also cribbed concepts from better action movies such as “The Villainess” and “The Matrix Reloaded.” It isn’t new or inherently wrong to pander to younger audiences, but “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins” takes much too much time and requires so much power simply for a bunch of hacky clichés that don’t really hold together.

I mean, it’s a film that begins with Snake Eyes putting an Uzi into the intestines of a massive fish. A sightless ninja nicknamed “Blind Master” (Peter Mensah) later reveals a camouflage fabric that enables him to merge in a stone wall. There is a barely consistent sparring session between the two sequences, when Golding plays against the Indonesian martial artist Iko Uwais (“The Raid: Redemption,” “Headshot”), who portrays a haggard ninja called “Hard Master.” In “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origines,” there are many more gonzo concepts and scenarios that could have been amusing, but few of them are really entertaining.

It’s not exactly new to pander for youngsters, particularly for large budget films to over-sell the significance of action figures. But what if the most significant thing you can say about what you see in any particular scenario is, “Well, they’re trying!” Motions are also not usually the worst filming sin, but it is in a large budget that is spectacularly inspired and blocked only ever. Discuss the ritualized significance of family and honor all you want, but if nothing is on display that is eye-catching enough to justify all that self-serious conversation? That may be very dangerous.
