The Woman King is base on the historical tale of a proud and powerful kingdom that fought French colonization until it was brought to its knees by a cruel army of French troops till it breathed its last. Viola Davis appears as Nanisca, the general of her all-female military regiment. The film recounts the true story of how this nation was brought to its knees. Her ferocity was so great that she led her troops into war against her adversary, General Oba Ade. Although she was not victorious in every conflict, she never gave up faith in herself or her people. This persistent sense of self-belief will make you smile as you watch this movie.

The Woman King is an incredible piece of cinematic work. It is based on the life of Nanisca, who rose through the ranks to become one of Africa’s most potent military chiefs.

Creating a Dramatization

On the other hand, when a filmmaker is creating a dramatization, they are not necessarily employing facts from historical events; instead, they are creating something fictitious that may or may not reflect reality. The Woman King is another example of this kind of film since it provides a creative interpretation of the events that took place during Nanisca’s ascent to power as queen general of the Dahomey Kingdom (present-day Benin).
