Woman King

The Woman King is a 2022 release of a biographical drama film produced in the United States of America. The film The Woman King depicts the actual tale of a strong and ferocious kingdom that battled French colonization until its very last breath. Viola Davis plays in the film Nanisca, the King of Dahomey’s first wife and the General of her all-female military regiment. The screenwriter’s Maria Bello and Dana Stevens came up with the initial concept for the movie.

Gina Prince-Bythewood was the one who directed the movie. In contrast, Maria Bello and Dana Stevens were the ones who wrote the screenplay. In the movie, Viola Davis plays the role of Nanisca, a female commander in the Dahomey Kingdom who rose through the ranks while facing opposition from strong and vicious males. “The Woman King” is the first historical epic film produce in the United States and was release in 2022. It is the story of the mythical queen, who became a symbol of hope during a time of war and strife. She battle for her people and became a part of their history.

Storyline

During her reign as governor of the West African kingdom of Dahomey in 1823, General Nanisca also held the position of commander-in-chief of the all-female Agojie military squad. She oversaw the liberation of Dahomean women enslaved by slavers from the Oyo Empire by the Agojie under her guidance. This development persuades Dahomey’s King Ghezo that a full-scale conflict with the Oyo is inevitable in the near future. Intending to protect the kingdom, Nanisca begins the process of training a new generation of warriors who will become members of the Agojie.

Nawi

As one of these courageous women, Nawi is an excellent example since she refused to marry an abusive guy and was handed over to the monarch in exchange for her freedom. In Nawi’s new friendship, Agojie Izogie, the seasoned Agojie, is a great help. Nanisca notices that she has a birthmark on the left side of her shoulder, and she informs Nanisca that she has adopted her.

Santo Ferreira

According to an agreement between Santo Ferreira, the captain of the European slave fleet, and the half-Dahomean Malik, one of the slavers, arrived in Africa as part of their agreement with the Oyo, commanded by General Oba Ade, the monarch of the Oyo. A quick friendship forms between Nawi and Malik in the shower. Nawi, who has just graduated from Agojie training, finds out through his friend Malik, who has been living with the Oyo for a long time, that they are planning an attack when they are undetected. Upon informing Nanisca of this knowledge, Nanisca chastises her for being irresponsible, and she apologizes to her.

Storyline

During Nanisca’s childhood, she claims that Oba abducted her, raped her, and impregnated her. As Nanisca gave up the baby she had just given birth, she carried a shark tooth on her left shoulder. As Nanisca pulls Nawi’s teeth, she confirms to the young woman that she is the woman who gave birth to her. The Oyo are attacking the Agojie under the command of Nanisca. Despite the attack’s success, Oba escapes, and Nawi and Izogie are apprehend while the two other soldiers escape. Only after a kidnapped Agojie escaped could Nanisca find out what had happened to the other Agojie.

Nanisca

Nanisca is being prepare to take over as the co-ruler of Dahomey by Ghezo by bestowing the title of Woman King on her. Still, he refuses to permit anybody to attempt to liberate Agojie from his authority. While Izogie was fleeing, he was killed by the enemy, which led Malik to buy Nawi as protection for himself. Nanisca and the warriors of her tribe defy orders and set off on a quest to release the captives of her tribe from captivity. Nawi finds a way out of the pandemonium and is reunited with Nanisca by the end of the episode.

Woman King movie

There is no doubt that the one-on-one battle between Nanisca and Oba culminated in the death of Oba because of the drowning of Santo by Malik’s liberated slaves. Before crowning Nanisca as the Woman King of Dahomey, Ghezo gives Agojie a brief private rebuke for disrespecting him in the wake of Agojie’s triumphant return to Dahomey. After the festivities have concluded, Nanisca and Nawi take a moment to celebrate their close bond as a family.

The Review

The Woman King is base on the historical tale of a proud and powerful kingdom that fought French colonization until it was brought to its knees by a cruel army of French troops till it breathed its last. Viola Davis appears as Nanisca, the general of her all-female military regiment. The film recounts the true story of how this nation was brought to its knees. Her ferocity was so great that she led her troops into war against her adversary, General Oba Ade. Although she was not victorious in every conflict, she never gave up faith in herself or her people. Viola Davis, who won an Oscar for her performance, portrays a legendary warrior queen. The latter successfully led a military battle against the Portuguese slave trade in Angola during the 16th century. This film’s director is re-creating a genuine person’s life to create a biopic. The Woman King is an incredible piece of cinematic work. It is based on the life of Nanisca, who rose through the ranks to become one of Africa’s most potent military chiefs.

Creating a Dramatization

On the other hand, when a filmmaker is creating a dramatization, they are not necessarily employing facts from historical events; instead, they are creating something fictitious that may or may not reflect reality. The Woman King is another example of this kind of film since it provides a creative interpretation of the events that took place during Nanisca’s ascent to power as queen general of the Dahomey Kingdom (present-day Benin).

The movie focuses on the power that Sweet Girl possess. This underscores the reality that you do not need a man to tell you what is right since they could not know anything themselves. This is a compelling narrative about women discovering their courage in the face of males who attempt to tell them what to do. It has outstanding performances by Viola Davis, Jimmy Odukoya, and Thuso Mbedu, amongst others, in the cast. The story also features other cast members.

Conclusion

The Woman King is an impressive movie with strong work from all its cast members. The only thing that makes this movie worth seeing is Viola Davis’s performance; she is just as good as Nanisca. The supporting cast members are also quite good, notably Jaha Odukoya’s performance as General Oba Ade. General Oba Ade is entrust with tracking down Nanisca when she escapes from Dahomey. If you are an aspiring feminist interested in learning how some influential women influenced history, you should see this movie. I highly recommend it.
