In what might be the boldest animated film pitch of the decade, The Hunt for Osama has officially been greenlit for production. The film follows three stoner musicians who, after a disastrous gig in Islamabad, accidentally wander into a CIA black site and find themselves recruited for the most unlikely mission in American intelligence history.
The project, which has been in development for several years, combines hand-drawn animation with digital compositing to create a visual style the producers describe as "Heavy Metal meets Archer, but with better music."
A Different Kind of War Story
Director and creator MG has been working on the concept since the early 2010s, refining the script through multiple iterations. "It's not really about the war on terror," he explains. "It's about three guys who are completely out of their depth, and the absurdity of the world they stumble into."
The three protagonists — a guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer — form a band called The528s, named after the frequency they believe can "heal the universe, man." Their journey from dive bars to the mountains of Tora Bora is powered by equal parts THC and dumb luck.
We wanted to make something that feels dangerous and funny at the same time. Animation lets us go places live action can't.
The voice cast is still under wraps, but sources suggest several well-known comedy actors have signed on. Pre-production is underway, with location scouting for background reference art already in progress across multiple countries.
